East Dundee Village trustees want to bring back fired Village Administrator Jennifer Johnsen.
Village President Jeffrey Lynam terminated Johnsen, who was hired in 2017, minutes before a closed door meeting to discuss her employment was to begin this past Monday. It was later revealed that Johnsen was involved in a “consensual relationship” with Assistant Village Administrator Brad Mitchell.
Village trustees, who were aware of the relationship, can override Lynam’s action with a two-thirds majority vote, according to state statute.
A special village board meeting is to be held 6 p.M. Monday. It will be preceded at 5 p.M. By a closed door session requested by trustees.

Trustees also revised the special meeting agenda to include a vote to disapprove of Lynam’s actions and reinstate Johnsen and to allow for additional action as a result of the scheduled closed door meeting.
According to the agenda, Lynam also is expected to provide trustees with his reason for firing Johnsen.
Lynam’s action took board members by surprise. Trustee Scott Andresen said the board was “ambushed” and in social media following the meeting questioned the public release of information about Johnsen’s relationship with Mitchell.
“Unfortunately, the personal life of a departed village administrator has been cruelly laid bare for public scrutiny at a very curious time when our village president is looking to change the narrative surrounding a poorly handled termination days earlier,” Andresen wrote in a post.
Andresen has been a vocal critic of Lynam, who narrowly defeated incumbent Village President Lael Miller in the April election.
“Furthermore the totality of circumstances present indicate to me that the village administrator’s personal life was not the reason she was terminated, but rather an excuse to do what the village president had planned all along,” Andresen wrote.
The relationship initially came to light through an anonymous letter sent to village board members just before the April election, trustees said. In a May email, Johnsen confirmed her relationship with Mitchell and informed trustees she and Mitchell were expecting a child in October.
Johnsen also said the two had combined their families and though they did not have a date or specific plans, they did intend to get married, trustees said.
After Johnsen’s dismissal Monday, Lynam said he fired Johnsen because the relationship between him and Johnsen had deteriorated. Lynam also suggested that Johnsen had opened the village to “certain liabilities” such as potential lawsuits, but declined to provide details.
“The relationship had deteriorated to the point where I just didn’t feel like it could recover so I had to make a decision,” Lynam said Monday of Johnsen’s removal. “The situation was untenable … it posed far too great a risk for the village of East Dundee to retain her.”
Neither Lynam nor Johnsen could be reached for comment for this story. A call to Mitchell at East Dundee Village Hall also was not returned Friday. Mitchell remains employed by the village.
When reached at her home Monday evening after her removal, Johnsen said she believed she still had the support of the board and pointed to a section in state law that would allow trustees to reinstate her with a two-thirds majority vote of the board. She also acknowledged that the relationship between her and Lynam was strained.
“We do not have a good working relationship,” Johnsen said earlier this week. “There’s a misunderstanding of roles and I have tried to provide clarity on what the village president’s role is. … He wants to assume authority he doesn’t have so we have not had a good relationship.”
Some trustees questioned the timing of the release of information about Johnsen’s relationship with Mitchell. Trustees this week confirmed they expected to discuss their own concerns regarding the relationship and that Johnsen was supposed to provide trustees with a reporting structure outlining who village employees report to within village hall.
“We never got to see that because Jeff short-circuited that,” Trustee Kathleen Mahony said.
She and others noted the relationship between Johnsen and Mitchell is consensual and there is nothing in village policy prohibiting fraternization between employees. However, some expressed concern about Johnsen’s direct supervision over Mitchell and had hoped to have a discussion about those concerns during Monday’s closed door meeting.
Despite that, trustees said Lynam should not have taken the action of firing Johnsen.
“There were so many things that were going to be rightfully raised in a larger discussion about how they (Johnsen and Mitchell) were going to approach this,” Trustee Sarah Brittin said. “We had so many things to discuss. It’s a really unfortunate situation we find ourselves in now.”
Four of the five trustees who were reached for comment — including Mahoney, Brittin, Andresen and Tricia Saviano — said they had have not received any complaints from residents or employees regarding Johnsen’s relationship with Mitchell. Trustee Scott Kunze declined to comment on the issue.
Trustees also have not requested a legal opinion from the village’s attorney regarding the situation, Mahony said.
Also on Monday’s agenda are items to discuss the appointment of Frank Scarpelli and Jim Carlini to the village board. Lynam put Scarpelli’s name to the board to fill Andresen’s seat, contending that Andresen’s seat is vacant because Andresen did not run for reelection and only two people ran for three open seats, including Andresen’s seat, in the April election.
Trustees have supported retaining Andresen on the board and have declined to vote on Lynam’s proposed appointments for Andresen’s seat.

Ryan Seacrest 'Very Happy' With Instagram Model Girlfriend, Keeping Relationship 'Private': Report
KEY POINTSRyan Seacrest has found love in Instagram influencer Aubrey Paige Petcosky a year after his split from Shayna Taylor, according to a report.
Seacrest, 46, and the 23-year-old model have been keeping a low profile, but Us Weekly reported, citing an unnamed insider, that their relationship is going strong.
"Ryan has met Aubrey’s family," an unnamed source told the outlet. "They think he’s a wonderful guy."
Seacrest and Petcosky are reportedly "very happy together and doing great," the tipster said, adding that they are "keeping their relationship very private."
The "American Idol" host and Petcosky sparked romance rumors last month after they were photographed arriving in the Hamptons together via helicopter. In the photos obtained by Daily Mail, the two can be seen walking side by side after touching down at a heliport on the West Side Highway in New York City over Memorial Day weekend.
Seacrest is also among Petcosky's nearly 50,000 followers on Instagram. But while she has not posted or made any mention of the "Live! With Kelly and Ryan" co-host on her page, the former cocktail waitress shared a bikini photo that appeared to have been taken at Seacrest's Beverly Hills estate, the outlet noted. In the photo, Petcosky is wearing a leopard-print bikini while lounging by the pool.
Seacrest put his property on the market for $85 million in November 2020, but there have been no reports of a sale yet, Page Six noted.
Prior to his rumored romance with Petcosky, Seacrest was spotted in Cabo San Lucas in June 2020 with a mystery woman clad in a bikini. He was with a group of friends, and they flew to Mexico via a private jet for a short rest and vacation.
"He spent the whole time with his new lady at their private villa," an unnamed insider told E! News of the getaway at the time. "Ryan looked relaxed and was able to just sit and chat. He didn't have his phone or computer around and was very attentive and always having deep conversations with his new girl."
The sighting happened shortly after he and Taylor, 28, confirmed that they are ending their relationship after nearly a decade together.
"Ryan and Shayna decided to end their romantic relationship amicably some time ago. They remain good friends, each other's biggest supporters and will always cherish their time together as a couple," a rep for Seacrest said in a statement to E! News.
Seacrest and the chef had an on-again, off-again relationship for eight years. In February 2019, they split but got back together months later, before finally going their separate ways last year.
